The rules of the Confraria are laid out in the Estatutos and the Usanças, the former being of Public Record and the latter, the internal rules approved by the Capitulo.

The two documents work in combination to outline, in great detail, the rules guiding the activities of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto.

For example, while the Ranks of the Confrades are defined in the Estatutos, their ceremonial insignias are defined in the Usanças.
