History of the Confraria

Established in 1982, the Confraria do Vinho do Porto was created by leading members of the Port Wine trade to unite forces in the communication and promotion of Port Wine.

Today, with 2500 members, the Confraria is a unique influencer and guardian of intangible heritage, combining tradition with a pioneering vision for the future of Port Wine.

The founding Mestres chose Infante D. Henrique, also known as Henry the Navigator, as the patron of Confraria do Vinho do Porto. The third son of King D. João I, he was born in Porto on 4th March 1394. The indomitable character of this great Portuguese Prince, who inspired the most extraordinary maritime voyages and exploration, is reflected in the traditional values and qualities so characteristic of Port Wine.

Although the movement to create the Wine Confrarias started in 1945, it was only in 1964 that the efforts to form a Confraria in the Port Wine Trade came close to becoming a reality. However, despite the fact that the process had been totally organized, the many complexities encountered with forming independent associations in Portugal at that time delayed the project until 1982.

Thus, it was in November of 1982 that the Confraria do Vinho do Porto was formally founded by public deed, thus fulfilling the longstanding dream of the founding Mestres.

The original headquarters were in the Palácio da Bolsa, in the city of Porto and moved to Rua Dr. António Granjo, em Vila Nova de Gaia in 2004.

Established with the statutory purpose of communicating and promoting the worldwide reputation of Port Wine, the Confraria do Vinho do Porto welcomes into its organization members who, by their actions, reputations, or positions make a significant contribution to the image and knowledge of Port Wine.
